The 911 continually evolved into a more sophisticated, powerful, and capable driving machine, as well as a reliable and usable car. 1969 ushered in the first major changes to the model lineup. The unique and successful rear engine layout remained, as did the same basic styling. The rear track and wheelbase grew, while the overall length remained the same as the earlier cars. Mechanical fuel injection debuted as well as a new trim level, 911E. The 911E received its name from Einspritzung, the German term for injection. Fitting between the base-model 911T and top trim 911S, the 911E which replaced the 911L, carried various improvements in the finish, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and mechanicals, like vented disc brakes. The model years 1971-73 consisted of the same trim levels, all however received larger 2.4L engines with MFI (U.S. -market specific).
This restored 1973 E is finished in white. The interior has been restored in California with new carpets, headliner, trim, and groovy green leather by Autobahn Interiors. Furthermore, the car was tastefully fitted with Sport Seats with houndstooth inserts. Mechanically, the car carries a 2.4L “green case” engine with an MFI injection system that, in accordance with the official Porsche Redbook, is believed to be matching. The underside is as fresh as the top side, with components appearing to have been replaced or freshened. The car wears Bilstein shocks and rides on Fuchs alloy wheels restored by Harvey Weidman, wrapped in Vredestein Sprint Classic 185/70 HR15 tires. Although little is known of the car’s early history, a binder of receipts detailing the restoration is included in the sale.
Nearing its 60th anniversary, the Porsche 911 remains as coveted as ever. The current generation 911 serves the driver seeking the latest in today’s technology while each of the previous iterations provides a glimpse into the evolution of what has undoubtedly become a masterpiece of design and performance. The original F-Body 911, without question, remains one of the most historically significant automobiles of all time. The Details
EXTERIOR
Body And Paint
The white paint throughout the exterior is in fantastic condition, showing smooth and consistent with great color throughout the vehicle. There are minimal imperfections to be found in the paint even in high-traffic areas such as the front bumper and leading edge of the hood. The body is also straight and smooth with no noticeable issues. All the body panel gaps are consistent and appear to be well within spec.
Glass And Trim
The glass throughout the car is clean and clear however there is some very light scratching present on the drivers side window that appears to be from normal use and has to be seen in the proper light to be visible. All the windows are stamped with the proper Sekurit stampings and the windshield is a Siegla branded piece. Headlights are clean and tidy, both marked H4 and showing minimal if any pitting and no cloudiness to speak of. The front side marker lights are Bosch branded. There is a small crack on the driver side in one of the screw holes, a common problem generally caused by over-tightening of the screws. The rear tail light covers are also Bosch and both appear clean and tidy with no cracking. The trim throughout the car is likewise very nicely done. The headlight rings are shiny and smooth. The chrome trim on the top of the door sills has some light scratching present and the trim surrounding the windows also has some light scratching as well as some cloudiness but overall presents in good condition. All rubber gaskets throughout the car retain good color and structure and appear to be relatively new.
Wheels
All four wheels are the correct style, Fuchs, with polished centers and lips and painted backings. They all remain in fantastic condition with smooth dark black painted surfaces and bright, clean, and clear polished surfaces. The center caps appear to be new and remain in excellent cosmetic shape. The Lugnuts are all painted black and show only minimal marring, likely from normal removal of the wheels, etc.
Notable Flaws
There is some light scratching and cloudiness to some of the trim surrounding the windows as well as the pieces on top of the door sill. Otherwise the exterior of the car remains in outstanding condition.
INTERIOR
Seats And Surfaces
Much like the exterior of the car, the interior was masterfully restored and remains in fantastic condition. The deeply bolstered sports seats are a beautiful addition, finished in green with houndstooth checkered inserts which are also green and black. The seats appear to be in like new condition showing next to no wear at all. Both of the door cards, as well as the face of the dash, are also finished in green nicely complementing the seats. A portion of the green material on the glove box is peeling up slightly which is likely an easy fix. The carpets are the correct style and fit very nicely, showing minimal wear while also retaining excellent color and weave. The dash is smooth and tidy with no pulling or discoloration. The two defroster vents located at the bottom of the windshield appear to be slightly deformed but fit well. The headliner is tight and free of any staining or issues. The gauges of the car are clean and clear easily legible and retain good color. There is some slight yellowing to the white lettering on some of the gauges most notable on the center-mounted tachometer. The HVAC controls show a bit more wear and aging than the rest of the interior but remain in presentable condition.
Functionality And Accessories
The doors of the car open and close with ease and display the iconic “Porsche Ping” when closed. The windows roll down as they should although the winding feels to be a bit stiff and may need the tracks greased for easier motion. The turn signals work as they should as well as the windshield wipers. Both interior overhead lights on the side of the cabin illuminate as they should. The radio does not appear to be currently working. The headlights function as they should the gauges all appear to illuminate when the headlights are turned on. The horn also does not appear to function currently. The fold-out pockets located in the side doors are tight and open and close nicely. The gauges all appear to read their requisite functions as they should. The dash-mounted clock ticks away and holds time as it should.
ENGINE BAY AND TRUNK
Engine Bay
The engine bay appears highly correct and very clean. Appropriate and correct finishes, clamps, hoses, and stickers are present throughout the engine bay. The fan shroud is painted in the iconic green color denoting the “E” engine. There are no signs of any issues either mechanically or cosmetically. Metal surfaces are smooth and clean while painted surfaces retain good color and overall the engine bay appears very well done as well as very well-maintained. The engine bay struts do not appear to want to keep the Engine bay cover in the air.
Trunk Area
The front trunk area is likewise very nicely restored and highly correct. The correct three-piece carpets are present, snap into place as they should, and fit well. The correct data tag is present on the front bumper sill and the chassis number is correctly stamped to the left of the fuel tank. The correct spare is located in the wheel well, clean and tidy. The hood struts do not want to keep the hood up in the air and will need to be replaced. Wiring, hoses, and tubing all appear correct and well looked after. There are no signs of any issues past or present, either cosmetically or mechanically. The Heater box area is solid and completed nicely although the interior components appear a bit dirtier than the rest of the car. Correct finishes and colors are present throughout the entirety of the front trunk.
Underside
The underside of the car presents much like the rest of the vehicle, clean and very properly restored. Overall it appears that this example has seen minimal careful use since the completion of the resotroation, judged by the overall cleanly appearance of teh underside. Correct finishes are present throughout and their are no signs of any issues past or present. Wheel wells are very clean and tidy, suspension components all appear new or well looked after and there are no signs of leaks or issues on the underside of the engine. Really the only thing differentiating this from a brand new car is some minor corrosion on the heads of a few bolts on the underside. The only notable issue is a long screw protruding through the floor on the drivers side floor pan which appears to have been utilized to mount the wooden kick plate backer of the pedals.
Notable Flaws
The struts for both the engine bay as well as the front trunk area will need to be replaced as they are not functioning. A common and easy problem to remedy. There is also a long screw protruding through the underside of the vehicle that appears to have been ulitized to mount the wooden kick plate backer in the pedal box.
