This Porsche 911 SC is a handsomely specified example of the stylish and engaging modern classic air-cooled sports car, in a ‚perfect‘ transient state. Presented with an appealing Silver Metallic and Petrol Blue finish over black vinyl and tartan cloth upholstery and boasting a lively 3.0-litre flat-six engine coupled to a refreshed five-speed manual gearbox and SSI + GT3 exhaust system, it would make a smart addition to any assembly of modern classics, and a charismatic companion for weekend drives, retro daily driving, and long road trips alike. Delivery can be arranged at additional costs, as you know I do like a road trip.

This particular 911 SC is an engaging modern classic air-cooled sports car with a rare factory non-sunroof spec, delivered initially to the only Porsche-authorised Japanese dealer, Mitsuwa, in May 1979. It has been enhanced with substantial maintenance, updates and upgrades since being imported to Ireland/UK.

It had five Japanese owners, two Japanese companies in the initial stages when the imported car was not allowed to register for personal use, and then a combined ownership between a couple from 1993 to 2013. It was imported to Ireland in 2016 with a Japanese Auction score of 4B at 91,000 kms. I purchased the car from the Irish owner in 2019.

Under the rear ducktail sits a matching number naturally aspirated 3.0-litre air-cooled flat-six, sending power to the rear wheels via a five-speed 915 manual transmission. Spent most of its time in Japan, the underbody of this 911 SC is relatively clean and well-maintained, with no apparent corrosions, unlike most unrestored classic cars from the same era in the EU.

The odometer shows 119,000 kms (~ 73,000 miles) per Japanese specification from the new and has never been converted to miles.


This 911 SC is finished in the handsome shade of Porsche Silver Metallic with Petrol Blue Metallic on the bonnet and ducktail over a full black vinyl-trimmed interior.

The seats have been upgraded to reclinable Japanese Recaro SR3s with factory-inspired MacLean Tartan inserts, a tribute to its original spec. Indeed, the first Japanese owner ordered the car in Petrol Blue with a MacLean Tartan seat insert.

Equipment includes all five working classic VDO Japanese specification dials, heater and ventilation controls, a heated rear screen, a Blaupunkt Madrid Bluetooth stereo, electric windows and mirrors, an aftermarket spring-loaded shifter, a new speaker set, a functional intermitter wiper knob, a set of aluminium proofread footrest boards, and a martini stripped wood gear knob. The electric antenna has stopped working.

It rides the forged Fuchs wheels, 16×7 on the front and 16×8 on the back, wearing Michelin Pilot Sports 4 tyres (2021).

This example has been upgraded with brand new SSI heat exchangers with a 997 stainless steel GT3 muffler and titanium twin-centre exit exhaust tip. A custom-made stainless connection was used to join the heat exchangers and GT3 muffler. It produces the most unique blend of classic engine sound and the modern GT3 exhaust sound.

A flat-mounted Momo Propotipo steering wheel was placed in the driver’s centre with the CORRECT (LHD) driving position.

The car comes with two spare keys, a silver whale tail, and a collection of factory ancillaries, which have been removed/replaced throughout the maintenance and upgrades.


It is noted that the colour of this 911 SC was ordered in the rare Petrol Blue colour from the factory, a note to the famous oil crises. However, it was not the most desired colour and was then repainted to Silver Metallic at some stage of Japanese ownership, perhaps back in the early 90s. To pay tribute to the factory colour, I removed the paint from the bonnet, inspected the panel, and painted Petrol Blue with the ducktail. I was amazed at the conditions of the panel underneath.

I intended to drive and enjoy this old, classic air-cooled 911 as much as possible. Indeed, I have taken it for North Coast 500 x2, Wales x1, Wilde Atlantic Coast x1 and many, many local road trips, covering over 15,000 miles under my ownership.

Well-used classic cars are good classic cars. I have commissioned a veteran Porsche rally mechanic in Northern Ireland, Mr Gribbin, to improve my car’s mechanic conditions significantly. Notable points are: engine dropped services with new injector seals, rubber intake boot, warm-up regulator, fuel lines both in the engine bay and tunnel, fuel pump, spark plugs and ignition and hydraulic chain tensioner (3.2 specs).

The gearbox was also rebuilt, all worn bushings were replaced, new dogteeth, synchro meshes and release bearings in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears, refreshed pedal set, and a new clutch. The total bills for the gearbox rebuild were: parts £1870 and labour £2000. It also has new CV boots, refreshed brake calipers, and new brake pads. All parts were sourced from Porsche Belfast or Matt in Type911.

This 911 has the correct RHD headlight covers and reflectors; the reflectors were fully refurbished by Central Engineering Design LTD Kent in 2021. A pair of LHD headlight reflectors are also included for EU trips.

Some touch-ups here and there, only if they were too deep; the front valance is covered with stone chips. „A dirty pig is a happy pig“.

The car has had several MOTs since registered in the UK, but it is now MOT and TAX exempted.


Before arriving in Ireland/UK, the car had its top-end engine refreshed in Japan in 2013 with support from a local specialist, Hinode Motors (http://www.911hinode-m.com/). A journey was documented on the previous owner’s online blog.

The most recent camcover gaskets and valve adjustments were completed in 2022. This 911 has had routine annual service from the same Porsche rally mechanic; the last oil and filter service was completed in April 2024 at 117,000 kms. This 911 hardly uses any oil between services.
