The Porsche 911 is easily considered one of the most coveted sports cars of all time. Its lengthy history extends over 50 years of production and to this day, the iconic design lines are still utilized. Throughout the 911’s long life, it has steadily evolved becoming more refined but still maintaining the essence of its roots. The air-cooled era spawned some of Porsche’s greatest creations and by 1989, they released what is referred to as the 964 series. The 964 was a milestone in the 911 lineage, as it saw a variety of technologies that were yet to be integrated as standard features in addition to having a new, re-engineered chassis. In terms of major cosmetic changes, the 964 received redesigned front and rear bumpers for better aerodynamics and an electronic, self-deploying rear wing for added downforce at high speeds. ABS and power steering were made a standard feature for the 964, as well as a 3.6L flat-six that propelled the car to 60mph in 5.5 seconds. Porsche did not stop there because one could either choose a rear-wheel-drive platform in the Carrera 2 or opt for four-wheel drive in the Carrera 4. The 964 was often overlooked by Porsche aficionados until the recent appreciation of air-cooled Porsches which sparked new interest in the once undervalued 964.
The “America Roadster” variant traces its roots back to the 1950s when US importer, Max Hoffman aimed to introduce an open-top, sporting 356 variant to the promising US market by offering the now highly coveted, 356 America Roadster. Only 25 were produced but this limited production run validated America’s desire for more offerings. Soon after, the Speedster was born. In a stroke of marketing brilliance, Porsche released the 964 America Roadster in 1992, 40 years after the debut of the 356 America Roadster and right before the release of the 964 Speedster. They paid further homage to the 356 version by adding a “0” to the end of the 356 America Roadster production figures to produce a total of 250 964 America Roadster variants for the US with even less (about 54) produced for the 1993 model year. As in the 356, the 964 Roadster was meant to be a performance-focused, open-top car. Breaking it down further, one will realize that the America Roadster is essentially a 964 Turbo-Look/Widebody in convertible form. It featured upgraded turbo brakes, suspension, 17-inch cup wheels, and rear seat deletion. These models now present as an opportunity to own a highly coveted, limited production, air-cooled Porsche for under $100,000.
The 911 America Roadster on offer here, chassis number WP0CB2963PS460567 with engine number 62P04196 shows 65,971 Miles and is fitted with its original engine according to its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity on file. This example is finished in rare “Black Metallic” (Z8) over Cashmere Beige/Black. Notable factory options include Supple Leather Heated Seats, Limited Slip Differential, Full Power Seats, Cruise Control, Center Caps with Porsche Crest, and more. In referencing the clean Carfax, we know that this car was likely sold new in New York and was subsequently owned in New Jersey, Illinois, then finally in Ohio from 2000-2015. The Carfax shows a consistent mileage and service log. Though service records on-hand are minimal, we do know that in 2006, the clutch was replaced at 45,152 miles by a European Specialty shop in Ohio. The current consignor purchased this example in 2015 and has used it sparingly since then as it resided among many other air-cooled Porsches. Upon its arrival at LBI Limited, we deemed it necessary to perform a full service commissioned by Leading Edge Autosport of West Chester, PA to address a multitude of items including spark plug wires, fluids change, drive belts, front brake pads/rotors replacement, top service and more for a total of $3,655.72. Today, this car presents in excellent condition as an inviting driver ready for use. We have personally put ~100 miles on this example and can attest to its excellent drivability. The body straight down the sides with excellent shut gaps and the doors close with the all-important „Porsche Ping.“ There are no signs of accident damage or panel replacement. The paint is deep, shiny and consistent with minor blemishes as expected from a car displaying this sort of mileage. There are a few small stone chips on the front bumper and hood that have been touched up along with some minor stone peppering on the side mirrors and bottoms of the „hips“ which are protected with Clearbra film.
The top is very nice with no rips. The clear plastic window is slightly faded and has one area of creasing that could potentially diminish if driven on a hot sunny day where the sunlight will allow it to become more plyable. The top boot cover is in excellent condition as well.
The glass is all original with original warning stickers and insignias. No cracks or scratches. The windshield is also original and show some faint stone peppering in certain lighting with one small chip towards the bottom that has been professionally filled.
The trim is very presentable and original with only some very minor aging on the door top trim prices. The common warping of the front bumper seal is no present on this car.
The wheel condition is presentable with only minor blemishes upon very close inspection but nothing that would warrant any sort of attention. Overall, very nice and commensurate with the mileage.
The interior is overall in excellent condition with no major or noticeable flaws. The seats have certainly been recovered at some point but appear to be well-done with correct pleating and stuffing. The carpets are free from any large stains or issues. The door panels are all very nice as well. The dash top is nearly perfect and the wood veneer and root-wood shifter are both in presentable condition.
An aftermarket radio and speakers have been tastefully installed along with a period-correct Valentine Radar Detector, and aluminum pedals. All of the systems appear to function properly including the lights, turn signals, Heater, A/C, top, and window regulators. There are no warning lights that are lit on the dash.
The engine bay is very original, clean and still has much of its factory finishes and original stickers. The engine compartment struts work as they should and there are no other issues are noteworthy.
The trunk area is very tidy, original, and free from any major blemishes or stains. The factory-applied VIN sticker is still present on the underside of the hood and the common faulty hood struts function as they should.
The engine fires to life with one crank of the starter and does not smoke. It idles well with no other notable issues, strange noises etc.
The transmission functions as it should with smooth shifts, and what we deem to be plenty of clutch pedal.
Brakes function well with no notable issues found and the front pads and rotors have been replaced with virtually zero mileage since. The suspension is firm, reacting to adverse road surfaces and undulations well. No strange noises were noticed upon test drive.
The tires are all Bridgestone Potenza’s all the way around with DOT dates of 2015. The tread life looks essentially new.
The driving experience is phenomenal. With the top down on a sunny spring afternoon, there are few experiences that can trump this! It accelerates rapidly to highway cruising speeds with no shattering, tracking or odd noises. Of course with any Porsche Cabriolet, when the top is up, wind noise and top creakiness can be abundant but expected. This car is does everything properly including putting a smile on the face of any driver and sometimes the passenger (depending on how eager you are to apply right foot pressure!)
