Porsche 356 A Speedster for sale at Road Scholars

Looks can be deceiving.

We love the patina on this low mileage Speedster; it has covered only 37,000 miles during its lifetime. It even has original oil changes stickers on the inside driver door jam from a Gulf filling station with the mileage recorded at 23,306.

The vehicle in detail

Porsche delivered Chassis #82612 to Max Hoffman in New York on September 21, 1956. It was ordered in the true spirit of less-is-more-Speedster philosophy with only one option of sealed beam headlights. Otherwise, this Speedster arrived in white with a black leatherette interior. We particularly love the beehive taillights of the Technical Program (T1) 356 models and the fact that this car is eligible for so many historical events and rallies being a pre-1957 example.

On January 27, 1959, William Robinson purchased chassis #82612 from Govans Chevrolet in Baltimore. He made the bold decision to trade his 1957 Chevy for the bright white little Speedster. William drove the Speedster regularly and decided to create his own version of roll up windows on both door panels to make the car a little more practical. In 1960, the original gas tank was having a problem and he replaced it. This is the only thing on the car that is not numbers matching or correctly date stamped. A few years later, in 1969 (after having 3 kids), William concluded that the Speedster was his most cherished possession and he wanted to preserve it for posterity sake and a prosperity stake. He had the exterior repainted white to make it perfect (but left the original paint under the current paint). Once it was done, he proceeded to put his freshly whitened Speedster in his two car garage. The current primer spots were from moving the car in his garage over the next 43 years…

Fast forward decades later and Alex Finigan, of Paul Russell and Company fame, chased down the story of a Speedster whose second owner had put it into a storage container for safe keeping. In 2012, Alex successfully negotiated a price and he became the third owner of this special time capsule Speedster. Being an all around car guy and having a deep passion for Porsches, Alex took the car home to his own garage and proceeded to bring the car back to roadworthiness. He rebuilt the fuel system, brakes, and performed a complete drive train restoration without disturbing any of the patina of the Speedster. In typical fashion of his work, this lovely patina-laden 356 drives like a brand new Speedster from 1956 but retains the soulfulness of original artifact. The interior is completely original, and so are all the parts on the car. Every body panel is stamped with the last three digits of the VIN and the original paint is under the repaint from so many years ago. The doors close in the fashion of an original car with a wonderful “ping’ sound. The drive train numbers match and the pieces are original to the Speedster as well.

Chassis #82612 is now looking for it’s fourth owner. That must be someone who will enjoy driving something soulful and just slightly different. Looks can be deceiving; in this case, we know they are not: We can promise that this car will attract more admirers than any restored example at any show. Oh! And it will also provide a carefree driving experience with many happy memories that are just waiting to happen.
