There are no secrets: only such carefully used and perfectly maintained Automobiles can go through almost 35 years and still to be in such mint preserved conditions today!

Very important: the Porsche Carrera 3,2 Cabrio has been produced in the period 1984/1989. The MY 1984/1985 and 1986 were equipped with the Porsche 915 gearbox. The MY 1987,1988 and 1989 were equipped with the new G50 gearbox.

For years, a myth has been perpetuated that Porsche’s 915 gearbox isn’t very good. However like many things in Porsche folklore, the truth is very different.

The 915 gearbox was derived from the 916 unit which had been built for competition in the 908 racer. The 915 made its first appearance on a 911 in ’72 with the 2.4 liter engine which had 8% more torque than the previous 2.2. The 915 is a fine competition gearbox; light, fast and accessible. Just look at it’s racing record – all the 911’s successes from the seventies and eighties.

Attached though Porsche was to the design of the 915 gearbox, it’s torque capacity was ultimately to prove finite despite continuous upgrades. But as each new 911 iteration was introduced, torque increased between 5 to 10 %… finally the 915’s capacity to transmit was reached. Rather than invest in tooling for a new gearbox casing for a larger capacity 915, Porsche turned instead to a cheaper solution represented by the Borg Warner synchromesh which was already sued in the Audi gearboxes fitted to the 924 and 944 models. So Schmid’s light, competition oriented design was reluctantly abandoned.

The 915 was a classic product of a Company devoted to competition and owners were expected to know how to use the clutch correctly. But the problem was drivers did not always use it correctly with the result that the gearbox was eventually prone to baulking with which it is associated today and the lower ratios become more difficult to engage.

Many unshamed purists for whom the 915 is an integral part of the Porsche experience accept that Porsche had to switch to the G50 as both the torque and weight of the 911 had increased. But for them the G50 was somewhat of a variance with the principle of the 911.

The classic 911 enthusiast who finds an exceptional 915 car, could get himself a 911 that is closer to traditional Porsche values and for real aficionados will offer more satisfaction than a 911 with the G50 transmission.

The 911 Carrera 3,2 has become a legend in Porsche romance because of its very high overall quality – engineering, manufacturing, materials -. It is a very well manufactured Automobile, very solid and reliable, made with best old days Porsche attention to detail and engineering. A Golden era model!

This Carrera 3,2 Cabrio is an exceptional example, in mint preserved conditions and TOTALLY original in every detail.

The provenance is perfectly documented: I’m just the 2nd owner and the original 1st Registration Certificate and other documents as well as the original 1st Registration plates are still with the car. This wonderful 911 Cabrio has been in the ownership of the same family since new and until I buy it.

It has been delivered on February 6th, 1984 from F. Pirola & Figli SpA – official Porsche dealer in Monza, very close to Milano – Noth of Italy – to Attrezzerie Adda SpA – a Company in Cornate d’Adda, also close to Milano – which bought the car on leasing. The 911 was registered in the name of the Comany’s owner’s wife at the leasing expiration. After her untimely passing, the 911 was registered in the name of the two daughters from whom I finally did buy it.

This 911 Cabrio has been sparingly and very carefully used, always garaged and regularly serviced and maintained. It was used the most in the three first years and on dry summer days as the family owns a property in Bellagio – on Como Lake -. It was less and less used in the following years and travelled just 167 kms from 2007 – the year when the lady owner prematurely passed away – to 2018.

Every item originally delivered with this Porsche is still there, nothing is missing.

The car is ASI – Automotoclub Storico Italiano – and FIVA – Federation Internationale Voiture Ancienne – registered.

THE MODEL – HISTORY

The auto industry model year (MY) runs from August 1 to 31 July, so a 1986 model could have been produced between 1 August 1985 and 31 July 1986.

1984 MY: the 911 Carrera 3.2 replaces the 911S C with Coupé, Targa and Cabriolet body styles. The 911 3.2 had a redesigned engine inlet and exhaust system, along with the fitment of a service-free Digital Engine Management ignition system (DME), in conjunction with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel metering. This resulted in a significant increase in engine performance but a significant reduction in fuel consumption, through better engine efficiency and fuel cut-off when coasting. With a capacity of 3.2 litres, and a high compression ratio of 10.3:1, the air-cooled 6-cylinder, horizontally opposed engine produces an output of 231 bhp, at 5,900 rpm. Maximum torque is 284 Nm at 4,800 rpm.

Special Wishes programme includes Turbo-Look Coupé.

1985 MY: introduction of new style slimmer front seats design, with option electrically adjusted height/recline and heating. Windscreen integrated radio aerial. Shorter gear shift travel. Special Wishes programme extended to include Turbo-Look Targa and Cabriolet (with stronger shells).

1986 MY: the bodyshell guarantee against rust perforation is extended to 10 years. New dash panel with face level and side vents, better heat regulation. Seats lowered 20mm with longer front/back travel. Turbo-Look becomes regular model.

1987 MY: Major upgrade to include G50 gearbox and hydraulic clutch operation. Rear fog and reverse lights integrated into rear reflective strip. Cabriolet receives powered roof.

1988 MY: Fuchs alloys (15-inch standard, 16-inch option) replace ‘telephone dial’ cast wheels. Passenger door mirror standard (was option). Carrera Club Sport introduced (stripped out Carrera with option code M637). Anniversary Carrera (250,000th 911, 25 years of 911), all Marine Blue metallic with same crushed leather interiors and ‘F.Porsche’ monogram on front headrests.

1989 MY: Flashing red diodes in lock buttons. 16-inch Fuchs standard. 911 Speedster (from March 1989).

The 911 Carrera 3,2 will appeal if you want to enjoy a classic Porsche that is full of idiosyncrasies but lacking the rough edges of earlier models.

Its driving character is defined by organ stop pedals that emerge from the floor, a slightly offset driving position, no power steering and a brake pedal that requires a knack to stop sharply without locking the front wheels.

It is a triumph of development over design, with torsion bar suspension remarkably suited to today’s poor roads. But there will be a point when you suddenly appreciate what this car is all about. It could be the air cooled flat-6 echoing off a wall as you pass or the thrill of actually accelerating through a corner to keep the rear end planted.

With a solid reputation for quality and reliability, this 911 will do what ever you want every day and all day, but reveals its thoroughbred performance in an instant.

The only major spec difference through the 3.2’s 6-year production was the change to the G50 gearbox for the 1987MY. The G50 has a more modern synchromesh and is identified by having reverse to the left and up.

Hereunder there are some data concerning the Porsche 911 Carrera 3,2 Cabrio performances. They are the average result of the car’s tests drive made from the most important specialised magazines all over the world.

0 to 200 km/h. 27,1 s.
