The Carrera 3.0 occupies a very special place in the history of the Porsche 911, because it combined elements of two of the most legendary Porsche 911s: the Porsche 911 Carrera RS of 1973 and the Porsche 911 Turbo 3.0 of 1975. Produced for only two years from 1975 to 1976 and only 2,546 Carrera 3.0 coupes were built.
The engine of the Carrera 3.0 was essentially the 2994 cc engine of the 911 Turbo minus the turbocharger. Built before the « 911 SC », it has everything the SC has and more. The Carrera 3.0 has more power (200 hp) and was still 10% lighter. In addition, the Carrera 3.0 has the steering wheel and crankshaft of the legendary Carrera RS ’73. The 3.0 Carrera would form the basis for all later 911s developed until 1989, including the 911 SC and the 3.2 Carrera. The performance of the 3.0 Carrera is surprisingly comparable to the famous 2.7 Carrera RS of the early 1970s and it was the last time Porsche used the Carrera name until 1985.
