Finished as an M-472 Touring model in classic Grand Prix white with red scripts and black interior, it is the consequential poster car of the early 70’s. Factory options include rarely seen electric window regulators.
Being one of the desirable first 500 examples produced, #0287 benefits from the initial homologation directives and features the thinner gauge sheet metal used in the bodywork and thinner side windows.
This RS was exported to Japan in May 1977 through a dealer based in or near Kyoto. The car spent many years in Japan and had only one single owner from 1977 to 2009 as evidenced by official Japanese plate records.
In 2009, the car was acquired by its second Japanese owner, who commissioned a comprehensive restoration on the car. The RS was previously fitted with a 3.0 liter SC engine, which was not uncommon practice before these cars became blue chip collectables. By 2009, the value and importance of these Carrera RS examples was well established internationally and a correct 911/83 type RS engine was sourced in Germany. The engine was then completely rebuilt and re-stamped (!) to match the original engine number and installed.
Further, the car was stripped to bare metal and completely disassembled to a shell before being repainted to original specification Grand Prix White. Some old photos of this period are on file showing the car in bare metal. The interior was refreshed as well, as was the trunk and engine compartment.
The car was imported to the US in 2014 and sold to an owner in Minnesota before the current owner purchased the RS in 2016 as part of his large Porsche collection.
Today, it presents as a very, very nice driver RS in original iconic color combination with hounds tooth sport seats interior and the iconic original aluminum framed duck tail.
This RS was just fully serviced and gone through by renowned air-cooled specialist John Holleran who also performed a leak down test on the motor showing an amazing 0% on all cylinders!
The odometer reads 97675 km (61046 miles) and is believed to be the original mileage on the car.
The car has Sekurit glass all around except for the Sigla windscreen.
The interior is excellent with restored dashboard and fresh carpets. The headliner, parcel shelf, and rear side panels were restored in 2009 and remain fantastic condition. The original 380mm steering wheel is excellent with some light patina. The gauges are fantastic (correct 250 km/h speedo for 1st series) and even the clock still works.
This Carrera performs absolutely spot on and represents an ideal candidate for events like the Tour Auto that put the focus on driving and enjoying the spirit of the RS legend. It is hard to over-emphasize the excitement and pure thrill these special cars correspond back to the driver. There is a reason, these cars are valued so high by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
Authentic Carrera RS do not come to the market very often, most are safely in collectors hands and rarely sold.
