In the pantheon of foundational and game-changing supercars, there can be no doubting the place of the original Carrera RS 2.7. With genuine motorsports DNA and ubiquitous Porsche engineering, the Carrera RS set a benchmark for usable high-performance as well as the template for the Porsche 911 model ever since. It marked Porsche’s first use of the Carrera name, establishing a historic motoring dynasty that survives to this day.

The vehicle in detail

Easily identified by that trademark ducktail rear wing, deeper front valance and of course that ‘Carrera’ script, these cars sit among that small group of certifiable icons; recognised and admired unilaterally. Conceived initially as a limited-edition Group 4 homologation car, endowed with over 200bhp to haul just 960kgs, this version of the 911 was the fastest German production car built up to that time.

Demand quickly outstripped supply and Porsche eventually committed to a total production run of a still-scant 1,580 cars, of which 1,308 were completed to the most popular Touring specification. The Carrera RS 2.7’s appeal was truly global and this rare right-hand drive example – chassis 0746 – was ordered on 15th December 1972 from Hong Kong Porsche importer Jebsen & Co. As confirmed by a copy of the original sales contract, the chosen optional extras included the limited slip differential (code 220), retractable seat belts (419), below-bumper fog lights (459) and an electric sliding sunroof (650).

Hand-written amendments show a last-minute change of heart regarding the colour, with Emerald Green struck-through in favour of the universally admired Tangerine; a colour complemented perfectly by Black leatherette upholstery and corduroy seat inserts. The definitive Carrera RS book confirms this as the final build specification and notes that just 126 Carrera RSs were built in this particularly era-appropriate colour. The same book confirms this car as being one of just 100 right-hand drive, ‘M 472’ Touring-spec Carrera RS 2.7s built for the global market.

William D. Poncher of the Corona Wig Factory Ltd. In Kwun Tong was the fortunate gentleman for whom this Tangerine dream became a reality when, on 7th May 1973, this Carrera RS was delivered. The Hong Kong wig trade was clearly a lucrative one. The surviving original Porsche Maintenance Record shows that the Porsche returned to Jebsen & Co. two months later for its first 600-mile service.

By the April of the following year the RS was sold to Joseph Wong, whose ownership would span an incredible 34-years and include a move from Hong Kong to Australia in 1988. The RS was clearly a cherished possession and had accumulated a total of just 11,331 miles by February 2008, at which point it was sold. Two further Australian owners would care for this important survivor, the second of whom embarked upon a highly sympathetic restoration with invoices totalling almost AU$200k. While refreshing the external condition, the sensible decision was taken to preserve the beautifully original interior and the factory finishes under both the bonnet and engine bay, which are testament to this car’s low mileage and careful ownership. Once finished the Carrera RS seduced its fifth owner, a British-based enthusiast who spirited it out of Australia and to the UK to start a nine-year ownership.

The current owner acquired the Carrera RS in 2022, at which point Independent and longstanding Porsche specialists Autofarm inspected the car. Their report confirms both the outstanding originality and the presence of seldom seen level of original features, which these RSs so often lost through insensitive restoration and motorsport. Still with just 13,702 miles from new, this super-rare right-hand drive Carrera RS remains among the top percentage of examples globally.
