In order to close the price gap between the 356, which was still in production, and the 911, the 912, a cheaper and at the same time considerably less powerful version of the 911, was launched in 1965.Externally and technically, the 912 was almost identical to the 911. In the rear, however, the 1.6-litre four-cylinder boxer engine from the 356 SC provided the drive. Its output had been reduced from 95 to 90 hp at 5,800 rpm for use in the 912 in order to give the engine more power and greater stability. Power was transmitted through a 4-speed manual gearbox.
