The Porsche 914, better known as the VW-Porsche, was the result of a cooperation between the vehicle manufacturers Volkswagen and Porsche. Ferry Porsche and VW boss Heinrich Nordhof, who is closely associated with the Porsche family, agreed with a handshake that Porsche would use its sports car know-how to participate in the development of a joint model, which would be sold separately as a VW variant and as a Porsche vehicle should be.
The prototype was presented to the public for the first time on March 1, 1968 and went into series production in 1969. Without special equipment, the VW-Porsche cost a whopping 12,250 DM. The model, powered by a 4-cylinder boxer engine (air-cooled), was made almost 120,000 times between autumn 1969 and 1976. It was the first mass-produced mid-engine vehicle in the world. The Porsche 914 of the first series has the 1.7 liter boxer mid-engine. With an output of 59 kW (80 hp) and a total weight of only 950 kg, the Porsche 914 reaches a top speed of 175 km/h.
A key feature of the 914 is its construction as a two-seater sports car with a built-in mid-engine and Targa roof that can be stowed in the rear trunk. The vehicle on offer from 1972 was optimized by the Joos company, which specializes in Porsche motorsport, to a displacement of 2.4 liters, which gives the vehicle an output of around 150 hp. This helps the lightweight to achieve impressive driving performance, which gives such a pure driving experience that only a few sports cars from that time can do.
The features of the Porsche 914 are primarily designed for lightweight construction. Besides a radio and a fire extinguisher, the enthusiast doesn't need much for a fun day on the pass road.
