First registered in October 1988, this 1989 model year 944 Turbo has been with its current keeper for the last eight years. It was ordered from the factory in the iconic Guards Red hue, with a black interior including sport seats with leather seat facings, and was equipped with the M030 sport suspension, limited-slip differential, and air-conditioning among other features.
To the best of the vendor’s knowledge, the sleek bodywork of this 944 Turbo has never sustained any significant damage, now presenting with flush shut lines and smooth, even panels. The condition of the paintwork has been described as excellent, presenting in mint condition following a professional respray in September 2020 and four months of indoor storage since. The vehicle rides on a set of 16-inch seven-spoke alloy wheels, which appear to be in superb order on all four corners, with the exception of some very light discolouration to the Porsche centre badges.
Moving inside, the front seats are trimmed with black leather facings and leatherette side and back panels, which are in great shape, and present with just some light creasing. However, this is commensurate with the mileage, considering the upholstery is believed to be entirely original. The cabin features black door cards, carpets and dashboard trim, all of which presents in good order, with no unsightly scratches or scuffs. The vendor indicates the cruise control system is currently inoperative, but otherwise, the car’s electrics and switchgear are reported to be in good working order. An aftermarket Sony stereo has been installed in place of the original Blaupunkt head unit.
The last routine maintenance was undertaken in December 2020 at 136,985 miles, where technicians at RPM Specialist Cars in Knaresborough changed the engine oil and filters, before fitting a new distributor cap, rotor arm, fuel pressure hose, cambelt, water pump, lower radiator hose, thermostat and fanbelt. The rear brakes were serviced and both handbrake cables were replaced, as well as a faulty starter motor, both bonnet struts, the windscreen washer pump and the turbo auxiliary coolant pump. An ABS fault was also resolved, before three new gearbox oil cooler pipe brackets were fitted.
Prior to this, in February 2012 at 131,209 miles, and in April 2009 at 122,005 miles, similar professional maintenance was undertaken. However, the vendor indicates the engine oil and filters were changed by him using correct parts between 2013 and 2016.
The most recent MOT test was on 14 December 2020 at 136,995 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories or defects. The vehicle previously failed a test on 11 December 2020 due to an inoperative offside repeater and a minor exhaust leak, but both of these issues were rectified immediately. The wheels come wrapped with a set of Bridgestone tyres, which were fitted in 2013.
Accompanying the vehicle are the original owner’s handbook and stamped service record, along with a large history file, the original toolkit, an air compressor and sunroof cover.
This 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo is a smart example of an exciting modern classic, which benefits from significant recent refurbishment, and boasts a superb late-model specification with numerous desirable options and the 250hp engine from the Turbo S. A well-used but well-maintained example of the breed, this 944 Turbo would make a superb weekend toy, or even a stylish retro daily driver.
