The Porsche 993 is an automobile series of Porsche AG and the successor to the Porsche 964 series. It is the last model of the Porsche classic 911 with air-cooled boxer engine air cooling.
The engine range of the 993 introduced in 1993 ranges from 200 kW (272 hp) or 210 kW (286 hp) in the Carrera and Targa models to the turbo top model with 300 kW (408 hp). In addition, performance-enhanced vehicles for motorsport were produced, whose engine outputs from 221 kW (300 hp) to 316 kW (430 hp) range.
The Porsche 993 was offered in the versions Carrera, Targa and Turbo. The Carrera was available as an alternative to the rear-wheel drive four-wheel drive in the models Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S. The turbo (from 1995) was standard with four-wheel drive.
In addition to a revised chassis with 20 mm wider rear tires, a reinforced brake system with perforated discs and the improved ABS 5, the drive has been further developed. In particular, the now with valve lifters with maintenance-free valve control of the engine ensured that the maintenance effort was significantly lower. In addition to the central locking was also an immobilizer with alarm on board as standard.
Maintenance costs for the 993 are lower than for its predecessors, earning it a reputation as a particularly reliable 911. The sales name Porsche 911 was preserved as in the 964. Even with the general engine principle, Porsche retained the proven technology and continued to rely on air cooling. For those customers who call themselves the so-called "cast iron", he is thus the last "real" 911, because with the successor model Porsche 996 also a completely redesigned engine with water cooling was introduced.
Technically and visually, the 993 is often regarded as the most mature and best 911 with an air-cooled boxer engine. Since he is the last Porsche 911 with an air-cooled engine, he comes in fan circles a special position. On the used car market are now paid lover prices for 993er. The prices for 993er are almost always higher than those of its successor model 996 with comparable mileage.
