Model history

The Porsche 996 marked the beginning of a new era in the history of the 911 in 1998: it was the first model in the series with a water-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine. The introduction of water cooling was necessary to meet modern performance and emission standards. The body was also completely redesigned – wider, longer, and more comfortable than its predecessor, the 993. Technically, the 996 featured four-valve technology and optional all-wheel drive, as well as modern equipment options. With over 175,000 units sold, it became the best-selling 911 generation of its time.
