As the first water-cooled Porsche 911, the 996 represents a paradigm shift in the history of the Stuttgart-based company. Not only was it the first 911 to feature water cooling, it was also the first Porsche 911 not to be handmade anymore.

Produced from 1997 to 2005, the 996 Carrera comes in two different generations. Before the facelift still equipped with the mirror headlights and 3.4 liter engine, it was as a 996.1 Carrera not to everyone’s taste. Porsche reacted to this in 2001. Then, they changed the front of the 911 for the 2002 model year, making it stand out from the small Boxster again. This makeover also made it visually distinctive again. At the same time, the engine was given slightly more displacement (3.6 liters) and produced 320 instead of 300 hp.
The 996 became noticeably more expensive since 2019
In addition to the two engine options, there were two powertrain and three body variants to choose from. These were: Coupé, Cabriolet and Targa. The Coupé and Cabrio could be ordered as Carrera 2 and 4 with rear- or all-wheel drive. In contrast, the Targa was only available with rear-wheel drive and only after the facelift. Prices seem to have bottomed out. In recent years, we have seen significant price increases across the entire model series.
Technically, the Carrera is not entirely free of blame. The 996 Carrera up to 2001 in particular has been plagued with leaking crankshaft seals and defects in the Intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) for example. In many cases, however, preventative maintenance has already been done. And the models in poor condition have already largely disappeared from the market anyway.
