The 964 model series became one of the most important in the history of the nine-eleven, because in the mid-1980s the car with its air-cooled boxer engine threatened to drift technically into the sidelines. The heating problem seemed to break the back of what is still Porsche’s most important car. But its creators were not satisfied with this, because they continued to develop the car even without an official order – with the threat of termination hanging over their heads – in order to eliminate the few weak points of the 911. The result was impressive, as the 964 series catapulted the concept of the 911 into the present with state-of-the-art technology in 1988. As the first series-produced all-wheel-drive sports car, the 911 Carrera 4 was even far ahead of its time. To this day, the Porsche 964 remains one of the most popular air-cooled Porsches ever, combining mature and reliable technology with safe driving characteristics and a fascinating engine sound.
“Porsche 964 -THE BOOK 1989 – 1994” presents every single model of this series and goes into detail about all special models and rare prototypes like the 964 CS “Clubsport”. Only one example of this model was made, which is completely unknown even to many connoisseurs of the subject. But also the private 911 Carrera 4 of Louise Piech is presented – an exclusive vehicle with a very special interior. Author Andreas Gabriel was able to meet the engineer for an interview, who was instrumental in the survival of the nine-eleven from 1979 onwards and also left his mark on the 964 model series.
