Porsche 356 speedster SCCA racer from 1956

Looking at the pictures of this beautiful speedster you immediately notice that this is not your regular Porsche 356 speedster, but it is a real SCCA racer which also has won several races. This speedster comes with an rich racing history and even with a trophy of one of the races it has won. The car was owned by Bill (William) Haenelt, his name is also stamped in the engine to know it is the engine of William Haenelt. This is characteristic for the racing cars. During his racing career he raced against a lot of big names such as Bruce Jennings and Bill Romig.

The trophy that comes with the car is from the race of 1961 on the circuit of Marlboro (Marlboro is seen as Bruce “Carrera Jennings” home track “Mr Carrera” as known throughout the Porsche collectors car hobby & community), which was won by William Haenelt, the driver of the 356 speedster. The family kept this trophy for over 61 years. Bills wife Gert Haenelt says that they never towed the car to the races, Bill always drove the car to the race and after the race he drove it back home, which sometimes required maintenance before he could drive it home, he would do this on location. Further, Bill only owned 1 Porsche in his entire life and that was his beloved Porsche 356 Red Speedster.

Next to the racing history of the car, it also comes with a lot of history of the driver.  The owner and driver of the 356 speedster was Bill (William) Haenelt. Bill was born on August 4, 1935 in New York, NY. He married Gudrum M. Czysch on May 1, 1957 in Germany. During his lifetime Bill was an member of the 7366th Radar Group in the US Airforce, he was a flight mechanic. He was an automotive engine machinist, builder and designer and ran a family business in Middletown, Quality Engine Dist. Bill was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption R.C. Church, DIRT motorsports, NASCAR Modified Club and the Sports Car Club of America.  The family of Bill states the he had three loves in his live, his family, his friends and auto racing. William ”Bill” Haenelt, a lifetime resident of Bloomingburg, died on Tuesday December 12, 2006 at O.R.M.C. Horton Campus Middletown, NY.  He was 71.
