1960 Porsche 356B Roadster – Sports Purpose Limited

This left-hand drive 356B Roadster chassis ‘88121’ is a Drauz bodied car delivered new to Max Hoffman Motors in New York before being sold to California.

One of 1,529 Roadsters built in 1960, it was first registered in June, and is recorded as having had only two owners from new in the US, both in the Los Angeles area. It was brought to the UK in 2016. Now registered ‘492 UYP’, the car has seen minimal use since arriving here, currently displaying a total mileage of just over 81,500 miles. Still adorned in 100% of its original ‘Ruby Red’ paint, the car boasts a stunning and original patina.

The car has never been restored and retains all its original bodywork as evidenced by number stampings on the bonnet, engine lid and doors. There are also original ID tags located on the driver’s door hinge post and next to the petrol tank.

The car was subject to an extensive and sympathetic overhaul by leading Porsche experts Maxted-Page Ltd three years ago. This work included a careful inspection and service of the engine as well as a strip and rebuild of the gearbox, flat down paintwork and polish and a MOT, at a cost of over £15,000 to the owner. The car comes complete with its original tools and books.

Our thoughts
A direct descendant of the celebrated Speedster, the 356B Roadster undoubtedly retains much of the purity of that earlier, more stripped-down and track-focused model. However, the Roadster is a far more practical proposition with its refined interior, taller windscreen, winding glass windows and cushioned seating.

With considerably fewer Roadsters produced in period, these cars are also a rarer commodity than the Speedster.

Still mechanically sound, its almost 60-year history is evident in each and every mark and bump of the bodywork and makes this a unique car that should be preserved in this wonderful ‘time capsule’ state.

It is a true reference car that we would be proud to own ourselves.
