1962 Porsche 356 B 1600 Super 90 for sale!

It is all too rarely that we get the pleasure of handling the model that is the basis of Porsche in its entirety. What started as a sports car study towards the end of the 40s became the now legendary Porsche 356 during the 50s. The small sports car took the outside world by storm from day one and also had great success in motorsport. Both rallying and ice racing proved well suited for a light little car with most of its weight over the driving rear wheels. There were three iterations before production ceased in 1965. The 356 A, which is considered the first « real » 356, was produced between 55-59 and was not unexpectedly followed by the 356 B, which was produced until 1962. The last three years of production, the car was called the 356 C. Germans and their naming…

Le véhicule en détail

But we’ll stay on 1962 since it’s precisely this year that this wonderfully off-white little car lands on our Swedish streets. A 356 B 1600 Super 90. The last part of the name is of great importance. 1600 of course refers to the engine size which is just under 1600cc and « 90 » refers to the horsepower that the engine delivers. The name Super is probably mostly based on the fact that 90 horsepower in 1962 was actually just super.

As I said, this example is sold in Sweden and has had its current owner for the last 30 years. The Swedish Transport Agency’s documentation is somewhat lacking that far back in time, but the first documented sale of the car that can be traced today took place in 1965 and is suspected to be from the first user. In total, the car has thus had four users and is in an outstanding condition. The off-white little coupe rests charmingly on its small polished 15″ rims.

The car immediately gives the impression of being light. Everything is small and seemingly delicate. The exterior is adorned with chrome details that nicely tie the whole together. At the back, even the exhaust system is a part of the bumper. Nothing that is unique to this example, but a wonderful detail that was found on the Super 90 models. The engine cover proudly bears the Porsche Club emblem. Small details, of course, which, together with the decals in the rear window, speak for themselves which has created many memories and given much joy over the years.

The interior is spartan with a dashboard that is in the exterior color and has been given a black leather top. A material that can of course be found both on the chairs and on the door sides. the contact points in the steering wheel and gear selector also feel delicate but are very well suited to both the car and the driving style it invites. Three simple gauges, a clock and a small radio…and glove box. That sums up the entire equipment list on the inside. But once in place, there is nothing more to be desired.
