‘The Cayman complex’ – an expression coined quite early in the life of Porsche’s smallest coupe and originating in what the media and consumers believed was a car with a little brother complex. A sports car that was constantly held back so that the big brother 911 would not have a competitor within its own brand. For many years, the expression existed with good reason. The Cayman quite clearly had a chassis and a configuration that was better suited for active driving, but the drive package was never as good as a 911. Then came the GT4.

Le véhicule en détail

The 981 generation was first and delivered exactly what was wanted. The small mid-engine car from Porsche finally had a powertrain to match the gorgeous chassis and at the end of 2019 the 718 platform took over with a new 718 GT4. The recipe was the same, but in ordinary Porsche fashion, everything was made a notch sharper. Starting under the hood. What was 3.8L in the 981 platform grew here to four liters. Still free from respiratory assistance. This classic white example combines its exterior with gray lightweight rims shod in Michelin rubber. The rim itself is a design that draws inspiration from classic Fuchs rims. The exterior design may be based around the 718 chassis but is far different from the base car. The front has been given a more aggressive appearance which helps with cooling and aerodynamics. Further back, a more aggressive air intake behind the door with a discreet GT4 emblem.

But it is at the rear that the car differs most noticeably. A fixed wing and a deeper diffuser cement the look of the GT4 as a really badass little bulldog.

The interior follows Porsche’s ethos when it comes to GT cars. Bucket seats in carbon fiber, half cage and a rather stripped down environment. Here’s what you need to drive fast. Between the seats, what can perhaps be seen as the car’s highlight. The manual gear selector. A dual-clutch box may be a few seconds faster, but in this class and with these power figures, nothing beats the mechanical feeling of shifting yourself.

Porsche’s GT4 platform remains one of the absolute most fun-to-drive cars in the brand’s history. This example is sold in Sweden and refined by Porsche’s own race team, Manthey-Racing, with a wheel suspension that enhances the driving experience thanks to the possibility of more aggressive camber settings and a greater possibility of adjustment. Akrapovic stands for the symphony with ‘over-shoulder’ pipes. and the brakes have increased functionality thanks to pads from Endless. The whole presents itself as one of the most perfect things you can imagine when it comes to active driving.
