For its entire existence, the Boxster comfortably filled the entry level sports car role for Porsche, a position which some enthusiasts felt was artificially constrained by a desire not to encroach too closely on the iconic 911. Over the decades, Porsche gradually relaxed this: first with the S variant, which added around 50hp, then the Cayman version, which added a roof, and for 2016, the GT4 appeared. This was a particularly noteworthy addition, the first time Porsche’s legendary GT division was allowed to create their vision of a high-performance track-oriented Boxster/Cayman. With the recent switch to turbocharging for almost the entire Porshce lineup, and PDK only for the GT3, the manual-only naturally-aspirated GT4 suddenly became the purist’s choice in the Porsche lineup. Despite this, GT3 sales did not falter, and Porsche realized there was space for both cars.

With this in mind, the GT4 was updated with a new 4.0 liter engine for 2021, replacing the 3.8 liter engine of the first GT4 and adding 34 hp and raising the redline to 8,000 RPM in the process. The addition of an optional PDK transmission added further flexibility to the model, especially for drivers seeking the most outright performance. Other updates included revised aerodynamics for 50% more downforce over the outgoing GT4 and a host of cosmetic changes.
