The 912 was practically a carbon copy of the 911 at a technical level and in external appearance. The difference lay in what was hidden under its rear hood, the same 1.6 boxer engine from the 356 SC (Type 616). This four-cylinder had sleeves with a special coating, a nickel and silicon alloy -known commercially as Nikasil, the same alloy that has so brilliantly accompanied the generations to subsequent generations until 993 until the appearance of the Alusil in the block M96 and M97 of the already water-cooled generations of the 996, 997 etc…

The engine was fed by two So Pll-4 carburettors. This made it easier and more comfortable to move at relaxed paces and improved traction and stability. Power transmission was logically to the rear wheels.
