By the time Porsche announced the runout GTS variant of the 928 towards the end of 1991, the Stuttgart marque’s first V-8-powered car had been in production for almost 15 years. Public perception of the model had shifted drastically in that time. Initially maligned as a clumsy attempt to replace the 911, later versions such as the S4 and GTS were lauded as true driver’s cars. This was due, in part, to the transaxle arrangement that helped offset the weight of the engine to provide better balance. The GTS made the most of this pin-sharp handling, with the 5.4-litre V-8 engine rated by the factory at 345 horsepower.
This example is equipped with the desirable five-speed “dog-leg” manual gearbox and finished in black over a black leather interior. It left the Zuffenhausen factory in May 1993 with optional extras including a sunroof and 17-inch “Cup” alloy wheels. The car was delivered via the Porsche concessionnaire, Jean Egreteaud (now Porsche Centre Bordeaux), and first registered in France on 16 December 1994. Changing hands through Brienne Auto of Bordeaux in February 1997, the car was acquired by its next owner in December 2005. It was sold again in October 2016 before being bought by the consigning owner in May 2021. Representing the pinnacle of 928 production, and with only 41,783 kilometres on its odometer at the time of cataloguing, this magnificent V-8 coupé is not one to be missed.
