1993 Porsche 928 GTS

It’s inconceivable today that the Porsche 928 was created to replace the storied 911, but rumors regulations and customer focus group opinions had Porsche unsure of their next moves. Motorsport magazine said of the 928 at its introduction for model year 1978, “It is Weissach’s solution to sports car motoring in the future, when the safety factions have had their heavy-handed, legislative say and machinery for pure driving pleasure, like the 911, has been outlawed.” Thankfully the 911’s demise never came to pass, and the grand touring 928 was allowed to develop its own distinct persona over the next 18 years.

The last of the series, and thanks to Porsche’s legendary commitment to improvement, the finest is the 1993–1995 928 GTS, enhanced with a more powerful 5.4-liter aluminum V8 engine producing 345 hp at 5700 RPM, with torque increased to 369 lb-ft at 4250 rpm. Car and Driver magazine said of the transformation: “Mash the go pedal hard onto the down­shift switch and the 928 GTS rockets forward in a frenzied rush, pulling with particular lustiness once the tach needle swings past 4000 rpm or so. It’s a compelling sonic event: 84 decibels of V8 sound and fury.” Larger four-piston caliper brakes using discs from the 911 Turbo in front, and 17 in wheels under wider fenders are further refinements. Body color-matching front and rear spoilers, twin-pipe exhaust, and a full wraparound red light-bar are distinctive elements of the GTS.

This 1993 928 GTS is a remarkably well preserved Canadian import delivered on 29 May 1992, remaining in its original ownership until May 2022. It then moved to Ohio showing 54,055 miles. The GTS was ordered with the striking combination of code Black Metallic paint with Magenta draped leather interior. Most importantly the original owner specified the “row-your-own” five-speed manual transmission; it is believed just six were imported into Canada for 1993. Factory options include heated seats, electric sliding sunroof, side protection Moldings, and CD-2 with radio sound system (RDS).

Throughout this 928’s life the factory warranty and maintenance handbook has been filled with several maintenance stamps as would be expected from this level of care. All other original factory documents, including the owner’s manual and the radio anti-theft radio program identification cards, are included. Of 2,904 928 GTS built, only 407 were made for the North American market; 163 with five-speed manual transaxle. This manual 1993 928 GTS is an exceptionally rare and beautifully preserved example of Porsche’s groundbreaking grand tourer.
