Le véhicule en détail

Derek Bell needs no introduction to Porsche circles. The driver commands an incredible five overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with four of those earned from behind the wheel of a Porsche. Only Tom Kristensen and Jacky Ickx have triumphed at Le Sarthe on more occasions than Bell. At the height of his success with the Porsche factory team, the manufacturer announced the 928 Club Sport. Five cars were built as prototypes—based largely on the 928 S4 but more closely resembling the final car—and presented to Porsche’s factory drivers: Jochen Mass, Hans Stuck, Jacky Ickx, Bob Wollek, and Derek Bell.
The car offered here is the prototype that Bell deployed as a “company car” during his time as a Porsche Works driver. Finished by the factory in Grand Prix White over a Marine Blue interior—a colour combination it retains to this day—the Porsche left Stuttgart on 30 June 1987. Its accompanying service book lists Porsche’s central headquarters as the distributing agent and it is said that Bell, a Briton, was reluctant to accept a left-hand-drive car in the United Kingdom. The car was eventually brought to British shores, however, and registered with the DVLA in February 1988 with the registration “E709 LOW”. It is said that the more UK-friendly mph speedometer was installed from new, at Bell’s request.

The five prototype units are thought to have yielded around 300 brake horsepower from the 928’s 5.0-litre V-8, while weight-saving measures for the work-in-progress car were commensurate with the eventual 100 kilograms saved between the production-specification S4 and Club Sport. Porsche engineers dialled in the detail to make the 928 Club Sport more engaging to drive, aided by a straight twin tailpipe exhaust, Club Sport-style wheels, and a wider rear track. The bodywork mirrored the appearance of the earlier S4, albeit being lighter.
Bell kept this car until 2005, when it was acquired by a UK collector, and it was then sold again at a Belgian auction in 2016. The car’s odometer reads 72,812 miles at the time of cataloguing and it is offered for sale with its Porsche folio and service books. This rare opportunity to acquire such a storied, matching-numbers Porsche will be viewed seriously by marque collectors.
