The classic G-body Porsche 911 was completley re-worked in 1989 and the 964 model was thus introduced. While keeping the same design and traditional look over 85% of the car was all new from the previous 911. A new 3.6L air-cooled flat six cylinder motor known internally as the M64 was fitted and produced 247 HP vs the outgoing model’s 217 HP. There were many additions which brought the 964 into modern 1990s technology like power steering, air bags, revised climate control system, ABS braking. The old torsion bar front suspension was finally replaced by coil springs and shock absorbers. A electronically deployable rear spoiler helped with stability at speed and new aero bumpers with integrated fog lamps and signals helped smooth out the styling. One big option was the availability of Porsche’s new all-wheel-drive system, which the « Carrera 4 » designation was affixed to. This system would split torque 31% to the front axle and 69% to the rear under normal driving conditions. The C4 models would allow the 911 to better compete with luxury brands and make the car more appealing to customers who wished for a more all weather sports car.
