1993 Porsche 968 Coupe – Authentic Motorcars

The Porsche 968 was a redesign based on the previous 944 model using the existing monocoque, doors and some glass. The new body design had styling cues from the 928 flagship like exposed retractable headlamps and a rounded rear end design featuring wrap around tail lamps as well as front integrated fog lamp/turn signal assemblies and aero side mirrors. The 968 was sold from 1992 to 1995, offered both in coupe and cabriolet body styles. The total units manufactured and distributed worldwide was approximately 12,500 units. The 3.0 engine is the heart of a 968, when new, it was the world’s largest capacity four-cylinder production powerplant. Developed from the 944’s M44/41 motor, the M44/43 fitted to the 968 used higher compression, forged internals, and new intake and exhaust to develop 240bhp at 6,200 rpm, with 225 lb/ft of torque at just over 4,100 rpm. The biggest innovation on the 3.0 engine was the Variocam, Porsche’s version of variable valve timing which enabled the engine to generate more torque in higher RPMs. A new 6-speed manual close ratio transmission was offered along with an optional Tiptronic automatic unit to allow the car to appeal to a wider audience.
