The latest, and wildest, in a long line of iconic Porsche 911s to wear the RS moniker, the 992 GT3 RS takes the basic formula of its forebear and adds an altogether new level of technical sophistication. Many of the car’s differentiating features will be familiar to Porsche enthusiasts: a hot-rodded, naturally aspirated, 4.0-liter flat-six, a reduced weight thanks to carbon fiber body panels and mechanical components, a wider track, and more aggressive suspension.
However, the 992 stands apart from every other 911 through its inclusion of sophisticated active aerodynamics that give it peak downforce–twice that of the previous GT3 RS, and three times that of the current GT3. When braking, the rear wing enters high downforce mode to add drag and give the tires more traction, while in the opposite regime, a Drag Reduction System, as employed on today’s Formula 1 cars, permits a higher speed than a fixed arrangement. The chassis and suspension also offer a wide range of adjustability, with four steering-wheel-mounted knobs to adjust the dampers, traction control, stability control, and torque vectoring.
The result is a car with physics-defying capabilities. On track, the GT3 RS outpaces much more powerful cars, thanks to its massive grip, which allows it to slow down less for corners and put down all the power that its 518 bhp 9,000 rpm screamer of an engine can deliver. Although the GT3 RS thrives in the racetrack environment, it is impressively accommodating on the road, with an even-tempered friendliness and an entertainment factor that rarely coexist in the same car.
The GT3 RS offered here is well-equipped with over $70,000 of options, including the Weissach package, which subtracts 33 pounds of weight by adding magnesium wheels, titanium shift paddles, visible carbon fiber body panels, carbon fiber structural elements, and carbon fiber sway bars. Other options include carbon ceramic brakes, LED headlamps, deviated stitching in silver, yellow interior accents, front axle lift, and much more. Having covered just 200 miles from new, the car is in superb order and is further enhanced by recently applied paint protection film and ceramic coating.
As rumors circulate that this may be the last non-hybrid generation of the Porsche GT car, the already significant demand for these incomparable machines has lengthened wait times and made allocations tough to come by.
