Porsche 993 Targa

The Porsche 993 succeeds the 964 from… 1993. At least it is unveiled this year and available the following year. It retains the features of the original Porsche 911, necessarily softened and rounded, the 90s oblige. Mechanically, it remains on the same recipe, since we find the air-cooled flat 6. And it is necessary to insist on it because it is the last generation to have air cooling. So for 911 fans, owners or not, this is the last « real » 911. However, it can count on a welcome reinforcement: a boot 6.

It starts with the entry-level Carrera version, coupe and convertible, with two wheel drive and 272 hp, the Carrera 4, with as many wheel drive, arrives the following year. In 1996, they will be increased to 285 hp. This year, they are available in S version with a look similar to the Turbo.

The Turbo, which appeared in 1995, saw its engine increase to 408 hp. The Turbo S was given a 450 hp engine with a double spoiler and additional air inlets. There are also the exclusive versions Carrera RS, GT, GT2, Speedster and even the first GTI Strassenversion.

Are we forgetting one? Yes, the Targa available from model year 96, only with the 285 hp engine in two-wheel drive. It abandons the original Targa roll bar for a panoramic glass roof that slides backwards.

As soon as you get on board a 993 Targa you are struck by the brightness of the interior, something you are not used to in a 993… The new targa philosophy developed by Porsche on this generation is very pleasant to use, although not quite in the traditional targa philosophy.
