One of the final variants of the 993-generation was the Carrera S (also referred to as the ‘2S’). Introduced in 1997, the rear wheel drive S offered similar upgrades as its all wheel drive 4S sibling announced a year prior. Wider bodywork from the Turbo, a stiffer suspension, and wider tires gave the S models a distinctive form and improved handling over the standard Carrera variants.

While most buyers ordered their cars with a six-speed manual, Porsche also offered their updated ‘Tiptronic S’ shiftable automatic for those who wished for a slightly more laid-back feel. In theory, the six-speed-equipped Carrera S is the quicker car, but the select clientele who purchased the Tiptronic found their real-world ability to get off the line was superior. With the ability to shift gears manually using buttons on the steering wheel or by using the gear selector in the center console, Tiptronic S cars offer « the best of both worlds » when it comes to driving enjoyment.
