The Porsche Boxster is a roadster (convertible) with two seats, a 6-cylinder boxer mid-engine and rear-wheel drive. The name « Boxster » is a combination of the words boxer and roadster. The Boxster has styling cues from the Porsche 550 from 1956.

The first generation Porsche Boxster (version number 986) came on the market in August 1996. With this model, unlike the Porsche 928, 924, 944 and 968, Porsche wanted to return to the 911 tradition with 6-cylinder boxer engines and rear-wheel drive. The Porsche Boxster turned out to be a great success. The first Porsche Boxster had a 2.5-liter engine with 204 hp.
