Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1990, the new 911 Turbo type 964 succeeded the 930 Turbo 3.3L “widowmaker”, while retaining its cylinder capacity. 3,660 cars and three years later, the displacement was increased to 3.6L, with the more modern M64 engine. The 964 Turbo 3.6L shows off a truly bad boy style, with a slightly reworked spoiler and the splendid three-piece Speedline rims from the RS Cup, which cover the now red brake calipers. The power of the aircooled flat 6 goes from initially 320 hp at 5,750 rpm to 360 hp at 5,500 rpm, thus propelling the car to 174 mph. 0 to 60 mph is achieved in 4.8 seconds and in the interior, the counter is now graduated up to 200 mph.
The 964 Turbo benefits from the triangulated running gear of this new generation, which marks a break with 25 years of use of torsion bars. At the front, as at the rear, combined springs and shock absorbers appear for better guidance. With power steering, handling becomes exceptional. In addition, the G50/52 5-speed manual gearbox is excellent. Apart from ABS, the car has no assistance but the precision of the front axle and the stability at high speed are two qualities of the Turbo. Produced in just 1437 units worldwide, the 964 Turbo 3.6L is nowadays one of the most sought-after models among collectors.
