THE PORSCHE 911
When introduced at the 1963 Frankfurt Auto Show, few believed the 911, through constant modification and evolution, would become one of the most important sports cars of all time. Broadly similar to the 356 it replaced, the 911 used a steel platform chassis with torsion bars, MacPherson front struts and rear trailing arms, and a new air-cooled flat-6 engine with a five-speed transaxle first seen on the racing 904. Like the 356C, the new 911 utilized disc brakes all round. Larger, more comfortable and quicker in every respect, the 911 proved a worthy successor to the 356, steadily evolving into the legendary supercar we know and love today.
THE CAR OFFERED
This 1972 ‘long hood’ 911 T Coupe is a European specification model, finished attractively in its original shade of Light Yellow (code 117) over black leatherette upholstery. This car was reportedly delivered new to Italy and is said to have had just two owners from new – having been in care of the same family from 1986 through today. The owner, a doctor and Porsche Club Italia member, has performed a range of thoughtful updates throughout his tenure to improve performance while maintaining the car’s pure, early 70s aesthetic.
The owner reports the car has received specialist care throughout his lengthy ownership, and that the original, numbers-matching engine is upgraded with 911 S pistons, connecting rods, and camshafts, and the chassis is suitably fitted with Koni Sport dampers. The vendor noted impressive performance on a recent test drive in Italy; the upgrades being put to good use. Period-correct ATS ‘Cookie Cutter’ alloys shod with Pirelli’s excellent CN36 radials give it a great stance. For the driver, there is a Fusina replica ’73 RS sport seat, and a smaller 38cm-diameter RS steering wheel to sharpen inputs. An accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity documents the car’s original specification, while the factory Schutz undercoating, remnants of factory corrosion prevention, factory Sekurit window glass, and Bosch lamps demonstrate a nicely preserved character.
With select improvements to enhance the fun-factor, this appealing and cherished 911, finished in a rarely seen but archetypal ’70s shade, is the ideal pick for rallies, tours, or weekend blasts up your favorite canyon roads.
