The successor to the now legendary 930, the 964 Turbo had big shoes to fill as Porsche’s flagship high performance sports car of the era. Although it is obviously related to its forebear, the 964 Turbo employed more than 70% new parts compared to the 930. The G50 5-speed transmission that was used in the last 930s was retained, albeit with dramatically improved shift linkage, while the engine was refined to increase output by about 20 hp. The suspension was completely redesigned, employing McPherson struts with coil springs for the first time, while new wheels and brakes (now with ABS) and significantly revised bodyshell and interior improved performance and comfort in every meaningful axis.] Nevertheless, it is still an air-cooled 911 Turbo, and a single turbocharged rear wheel drive one one at that. This gives it an excitement level unmatched by the 993 Turbo, and competence unmatched by the 930. Consequently, it is the hands-down pick for the air-cooled 911 connoisseur who wants to go quickly while still enjoying the drama and communication that only a rear wheel drive 911 can offer.
