1963 Porsche 356 B 1600 S Cabriolet by Reutter

The American fascination with Porsche took off when importer extraordinaire Max Hoffman brought 15 special roadsters to the US in 1954. In 1959, the Reutter-bodied roadster was replaced by the sophisticated Convertible D, which boasted a taller windshield, windup windows, and a top that fit better. The accompanying cabriolet offered even more creature comforts. The 356 B arrived in 1960, with 15-inch wheels, heavier and taller bumpers, and a revised slope to the hood. Headlights were moved to the top of the fenders, with amber parking lights below them, and brake vents below the bumper.

Das Fahrzeug im Detail

This 356 B 1600 S cabriolet boasts a highly attractive restoration of a very solid car and is finished in its original shade of Heron Grey. The body and panel fit are straight, while the chrome is presents well, and the ‘Euro-style’ taillights and all badges are in wonderful condition. The interior presents beautifully in blue leather, with original VDO gauges framed by the color-matched dashboard. The Porsche Production Specification (PPS) certificate notes that the car left the factory equipped with a Blaupunkt radio with dual speakers, dimmable rearview mirror, antenna, two suitcases, and fire extinguisher, making this a nicely optioned example when new. While the luggage and fire extinguisher are no longer with the car, overall, it presents mch as it did when it left the factory in Zuffenhausen on 1 July 1963.

The PPS certificate further notes that this car retains its matching-numbers 1600 Super engine and four-speed gearbox. The Super’s power output was originally rated at 84 horsepower, nearly double that of its predecessor. It is believed that the car spent most of its life in Virginia and is consequently in excellent structural condition. Always popular for touring or showing, the 1600 Super cabriolet will make a fine partner at any automotive event, especially with its striking color combination.
Much like it did some 50 years ago, the 1600 S remains a stellar performer which will carve corners with ease, all while offering the open-air motoring pleasure that only a drop-top Porsche can offer.
