As a late US model, this car has the 930/68 engine with 282 PS as standard. Until the 1986 model year, the US 911 Turbos had 265 PS and then received the more powerful engine which is also installed in this model. Finished in ‚Triple Black‘ specification this example is painted in non-metallic Black, over a black leather interior with sport seats, and a black Convertible top.
According to the available papers and conversations with the previous owners, the car had two owners in the USA. The first owner purchased the car in California and then moved to Aspen, Colorado in 1996. At the first emissions test in Aspen in 1996, the car had run 21,251 miles. In 2000 he sold the car back to California to the second owner from Santa Barbara. In 2003 he sold the car back to the first owner from Aspen. At that time the car had a mileage of 27,713 miles. In 2007 the current German owner bought the car in the USA with 28,272 miles and imported it to Germany. The car is currently registered in Germany as a historic vehicle.
Today, the car is in a very well-kept condition with a very nice, nearly new original interior. The paintwork is largely original and in remarkable condition, especially for a 33-year-old non-metallic Black. In addition to the original soft top, there is a full tonneau to cover the interior. Additionally, it features light, ‚bolt-on‘ modifications with a stainless steel sport exhaust and a larger Andial intercooler. The turbocharger is the original KKK turbo from Porsche.
Introduced by Porsche in 1975, the 911 Turbo was a revolution and immediately became an icon. The Turbo was the top model of Porsche and both extremely powerful and very well equipped. With its significantly wider body, wide rims, and its striking Turbo spoiler, it was instantly recognizable. It was the first production sports car in which Porsche installed a turbocharger and the fastest production car on German roads at the time of its introduction. With its high power output of 260 PS (191 kW) and comparatively low weight, it offered performance that was previously known almost only from pure racing cars.
At the end of 1977, a newly developed turbo came onto the market with the new RoW 3.3-liter 911 Turbo, which now reached the magical figure of 300 PS (220 kW), thus satisfying the wishes of the power-hungry clientele. The new 3.3-liter engine was the result of long development work in order to make the increase in power possible on the one hand, but also to adjust the car technically to the higher performance. The increase of the cubic capacity to 3298 cc made a number of new components such as crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons and cylinders as well a modified oil pump. In addition, the Turbo 3.3 is the first production engine with an intercooler. The optimized shape of the new ‚whale tail‘ spoiler provided more downforce and thus better power transmission of the rear wheels with the same air resistance. At the same time, the new design with its raised edges ensured better flow to the new intercooler. The brake system was also improved on the 3.3 Turbo: thicker brake discs at the front and rear allowed larger ventilation channels in the discs the brake discs were now ‚cross drilled‘, which made them more responsive on wet roads.
The 3.3-liter Turbo was built from 1978 to 1988 without major modifications. It was not until the 1989 model year that the ultimate evolutionary step of the Porsche 911 Turbo was launched. For this last model year, Porsche equipped the 911 Turbo with the modern and reinforced five-speed G50 transmission and also fitted the car with a hydraulic clutch. These changes significantly improved the driveability of the 911 Turbo once again. The additional gear allowed smaller rev intervals enabling the turbocharger to build up boost more quickly. The hydraulic clutch can be operated with significantly less power and also with greater precision, which makes for greater comfort and better starts. Chassis tuning improved with larger torsion bars on the rear axle, modified anti-roll bars, and harder-tuned shock absorbers.
