By teaming up with Volkswagen to design an economical, mass-market sports car, Porsche wanted to ensure the 356’s descent, without jeopardizing the career of its young 911.
In charge of the overall design of the car, Porsche also provided the engine for the top of the range, its 6 flat cylinders from the 911. The Porsche 914/6 thus became the ultimate version of the 914, with solid arguments to forge a good career, especially in the USA: a noble and powerful engine, a flawless road holding thanks to its central positioning, an original line and a clever Targa roof to enjoy driving with the wind in your hair. To top it all off, Porsche entered the 914 in competition where it quickly showed the extent of its talents. As a top-of-the-range version, it came standard with 15-inch alloy wheels from Mahle or, as an option, from Fuchs. But for added comfort, the customer could also request 14-inch Fuchs wheels (currently on the offered vehicle). On the US versions, recognizable by their round turn signal reminders on the front fenders, the name „Porsche“ was also added in gold letters on the engine grill to confirm the car’s paternity.
The interior is spacious, we find the big Porsche meters with the rev counter in the center. The 914/6 also has a different instrumentation (maximum speed and rpm) and a specific steering wheel, with the Porsche logo. The finish was also well done with many attractive details. It could also receive an optional full leather upholstery. Let’s finally specify that, contrary to the 914-4 fully assembled at Karmann, the production of the 914-6 was completed at Porsche in Stuttgart to finalize the assembly of the running gear and the engine.
The Porsche 914 is launched with two engines: for the entry level, a „flat 4“ Volkswagen 1.7L with fuel injection from the VW sedan and for the top of the range, a 2.0L Porsche flat 6-cylinder developing 110 hp.
With a weight/power ratio of 8.5 kg/hp, the 914 6-cylinder can reach 200 km/h and do 0-100 km/h in less than 10 seconds. The 914-6 could also boast a „real“ Porsche sound, the 1.7 version being far from it with its metallic sound reminding rather the Beetle. The Porsche 914-6 has the heritage of the competition models of the brand with its central engine that gives it a center of gravity and a balance out of the ordinary for the time.

En s’associant à Volkswagen pour concevoir une voiture de sport économique et de grande diffusion, Porsche souhaitait assurer la descendance de la 356, sans remettre en cause la carrière de sa jeune 911.
Chargé de la conception globale de la voiture, Porsche fournissait également la motorisation pour le haut de gamme, son 6 cylindres à plat issu de la 911. La Porsche 914/6 devint ainsi la version ultime de la 914, avec de solides arguments pour se forger un belle carrière, notamment aux USA : un moteur noble et performant, une tenue de route sans faille grâce à son positionnement central, une ligne originale et un astucieux toit Targa pour profiter de la conduite cheveux au vent.
Pour courronner le tout, Porsche engagea la 914 en compétition où elle montra rapidement l’étendue de ses talents. En tant que version haut de gamme, elle était livrée en série avec des jantes alliage 15 pouces de chez Mahle ou, en option, de chez Fuchs. Mais pour plus de confort, le client pouvait également demander des jantes Fuchs de 14 pouces (actuellement sur le véhicule proposé). Sur les versions US, reconnaissables à leurs rappels de clignotants ronds sur les ailes avant, le nom „Porsche“ était également ajouté en lettres dorées sur la grille moteur pour confirmer la paternité de la voiture.
L’intérieur est spacieux, on retrouve les gros compteurs Porsche avec le compte-tours au centre.
La 914/6 dispose également d’une instrumentation différente (vitesse maxi et régime maxi) et d’un volant spécifique, siglé Porsche. La finition apparâit également soignée avec de nombreux détails séduisants.
Elle pouvait également recevoir en option une sellerie cuir intégrale. Précisons enfin que, contrairement à la 914-4 intégralement assemblée chez Karmann, la production des 914-6 était achevée chez Porsche à Stuttgart pour finaliser le montage des trains roulants et du moteur.

La 914-6 pouvait également se targuer d’une „vraie“ sonorité Porsche, la version 1.7 étant assez loin du compte avec son bruit métallique rappelant plutot la Coccinelle. La Porsche 914-6 possède l’héritage des modèles de compétition de la marque par son moteur central qui lui confère un centre de gravité et un équilibre hors du commun pour l’époque.

Destinée au marché américain à l’origine, cette auto est arrivée en France en 2008 chez un grand collectionneur.
Un important dossier de factures d’environ 40 000 $ témoigne du bon entretien régulier de l’auto pendant son séjour aux US. Le propriétaire actuel a fait l’acquisition de cette 914/6 en 2012. Etant très pointu et méticuleux, il n’a pas pu s’empêcher au fil du temps de refaire la mécanique et de la fiabiliser, ainsi que de refaire un beau voile de peinture pour la rendre exceptionnelle. Il n’y a donc rien à prévoir, tout fonctionne et les défauts connus des 914 tels que le longeron sous la batterie ou d’autres mésaventures du style ont déjà été revues.
