Introduced for the 1992 model year, the 964 Carrera RS was only the second Porsche 911 model to wear the RS badge after the legendary 911 Carrera RS 2.7 of 1973. Following in its predecessor’s footsteps, the new RS was once more conceived as a track-focused, homologation special with a similar ethos of weight-saving and tuning.
Weighing just 2,706 pounds, a substantial 286 pounds less than the standard model – the RS’s seam-welded and strengthened body shell was stripped of extraneous convenience features such as power seats, electric windows, and basics like mirrors, air-conditioning, rear seats, airbags, and radio, although some items could be reinstated at the customer’s request. Other weight-saving measures included an aluminum front trunk lid, thinner-gauge rear and side glass, 17″magnesium cup wheels, a simplified wiring harness, a smaller battery, and deleted insulation and undercoating materials.
The RS boasted a modified version of the 3.6-liter M64/01 flat-six engine found in the 964 Carrera 2 and 4. Designated M64/03, the RS’s powerplant featured piston and cylinder matching, stiffer engine mounts, and a revised DME control unit with more advanced ignition timing. Factory rated at 260 hp at 6,100 rpm and 240 lbs./ft. of torque at 4,800 rpm, the thrust was delivered to the rear wheels through a G50/10 five-speed manual transaxle with shorter gearing, a limited-slip differential, and a lightweight, single-mass flywheel for improved throttle response. For more assured stopping, stouter brake components were appropriated from the 964 Turbo and 964 Carrera Cup racer. A 40 mm lowered suspension with firmer springs and tighter Bilstein dampers were also part of the package.
One of just 1,910 “basic” – or lightweight – RS models built between 1991 and 1992, this 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera RS is finished in Midnight Blue Metallic over a black leatherette interior and black leather Recaro bucket seats with tri-tone gray inserts. First registered in April 1992, this RS was delivered new to German Porsche enthusiast Jörg Steidinger. Mr. Steidinger retained and cherished the RS until 2018, when it was sold to the consignor, an avid California-based Porsche enthusiast. As evidenced by copious parts receipts and service logs on file, this RS has lacked for nothing to ensure it performs and drives as it should, while being used sparingly under current ownership. Accompanied by its original books, tools, spare, delivery accessories, and documentation, this RS indicates less than 23,000 km (15,000 miles) at the time of cataloguing and presents in well-preserved and original condition throughout. Never offered for sale when new in the US, this sale represents an opportunity for collectors to acquire a rare, desirable, and ideally specified 964 Carrera RS.
