GP Ice Race 2019 – The Ice Race is back

In 1974 there was the legendary Ice Race in Zell am See (Austria) for the last time. Since then, too much time has moved into the country. It is thanks to two young, motivated people that this wonderful race celebrated its revival after 45 years. The two friends, Ferdinand Porsche and Vincent Greger, had the idea to bring the concept of the ice race in Zell am See back to life. With great success. The GP Ice Race was born again. On the weekend of 19 and 20 January, nearly 8,000 racing fans watched a brilliant show on ice in picture-book winter weather. It started more than 130 participants in historic and modern racing and rally cars.

“We never expected such a great success when we had the idea to re-ignite the famous ice races in Zell am See, which have been run between 1937 and 1974, with a modern interpretation,” emphasized Ferdinand Porsche from Zell am See, together with Nuremberg born Vinzenz Greger initiator of the event and co-founder of Greger Porsche Classic Cars.

Celebrities and legends

Of course, such an event also attracts many celebrities. Motorsport greats such as Walter Röhrl, Hans-Joachim Stuck (right), former Formula One driver Mark Webber and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG, Dr. Ing. Wolfgang Porsche, did not miss the spectacle.

The weather god must be a racer, because he created perfect external conditions in Zell am See. Clashing cold and meter high snow. The ice race lived up to its name.

All in all a very successful event. Wonderful winter scenery, freezing cold, loud engines and drifting car legends on the ice. You could not have spent your weekend better. We congratulate the organizers and all those who made this revival possible. We look forward to another ice race in Zell am See in 2020.
