This is a rare 1966 Porsche 911 SWB. This model dates back to the time when Porsche was just beginning the success story that the Porsche 911 is today. The 911 was not only the successor to the extremely successful 356, but was also positioned slightly above it. Among other things, the car was given a better interior, more space, a better chassis, but above all: a six-cylinder boxer engine instead of the four-cylinder boxer engines in the Porsche 356.
This example was delivered new in California in the United States and is in very original condition. The paint has developed a beautiful patina and has been repainted once in the past for cosmetic reasons. The paint is in good condition with some light signs of wear that are consistent with the mileage and age of the car. The sheet metal is nice and thin throughout with correct fits and is free of rust. The car stands on the original steel wheels fitted with the original hubcaps. The rain gutters on the roof are all rust-free and run nicely straight. The engine compartment is well maintained and is also in very original condition.
The interior matches the car beautifully. For reasons of space, the steering wheel has been replaced by a three-spoke model with better grip. The seats have recently been reupholstered with a combination of imitation leather and fabric with a "pepita" pattern. The instruments are all original and function as they should. The wood on the dashboard is also in beautiful original condition. The carpets are all very original and in very good condition, as is the transmission lever. The seats were reupholstered at the time and are comfortable, as befits a Porsche.
The engine is also in very good condition. The car has been part of an extensive collection in recent years and has therefore not been used much. However, the technology has been well maintained and the engine runs beautifully. You can enjoy the smooth running of the engine in all its glory thanks to the stainless steel sports exhaust. The engine is equipped with Weber carburetors that are well tuned and allow the car to run smoothly through the revs. The transmission shifts well and the gear ratios are perfectly chosen, as you would expect from the engineers in Stuttgart. The chassis is used but in good condition and gives the 911 a pleasant driving character. The short wheelbase gives the 911 a delightful character, but you do need to be aware of the fact that the engine is located behind the rear wheels. Once you get used to that, the 911 is a delight to drive thanks to the original tires, which are very narrow by today's standards.
A Porsche 911 SWB offers a wonderful driving experience. The car literally drives like no other and allows you to fully enjoy the rear-mounted engine. That is what this car is meant for. It is a model that is perfectly suited to the driver. With a completely restored model, you probably won't want to drive in the rain, although that's perfectly possible because it used to rain in the past. But with a model like this, you will want to do just that. It is a driver's car in its prime. A wonderful basis for enjoying classic car rides or a car to take out on those beautiful Sunday mornings. In short, a beautiful original model that is in good condition and ready to be enjoyed.
