Model history

With the 2016 model year, Porsche combined the Boxster and Cayman model series under the name "718." The name is reminiscent of the historic racing cars of the 1950s. Technically, the change marked a radical departure: instead of the previous six-cylinder engines, turbocharged four-cylinder engines were now used. In contrast to the previous price structure, the 718 Boxster convertible was now the more expensive version compared to the closed 718 Cayman – a reversal of the previous model logic.
