The vehicle in detail

The rear placement of the engine in Porsche’s iconic 911 always presented dynamic challenges which were overcome over the course of decades through brilliant engineering. The more objectively “correct” engine placement was always amidships, and thus when Porsche’s first modern mid-engined car, the Boxster, appeared in the second half of the 1990s, it represented something of a conundrum. It promised a more controllable car with better handling balance, but it was an entry level sports car that would need to slot below the iconic 911, and thus it appeared that Porsche purposely limited the car’s performance so as not to encroach on the 911.

This meant that the original Boxster had a 5-speed transmission and 201hp when the base 911 made 282hp. Gradually, the Boxster’s performance was allowed to expand, first with the addition of the S (252hp with a 6-speed), and finally, nearly 15 years after the car’s introduction, a more focused model above that. In open form, this was called the Boxster Spyder, while the closed version was called the Cayman R. These cars approached the raciness of Porsche’s legendary GT cars, although they lacked the name.

The third generation of these two mid-engined cars marked the addition, for the first time, of a GT variant of the cars, specifically the Cayman GT4 for 2016. Initially 3.8 liters, the car was expanded to 4.0 liters for 2020, and finally, an RS version was added to the model line. By this time, the 911 franchise had become so legendary that Porsche was confident that the presence of the GT4RS in the product line would neither overshadow nor cannibalize 911 sales.

What GT4RS buyers received was a genuine RS product. It was powered by the GT3’s 4.0 liter flat-6, complete with 9000 RPM redline. A new intake system that drew air in through intakes on the panels where rear quarter windows had previously lived provided next-level intake noise. This powerplant was backed by a PDK gearbox, also from the GT3, complete with its closer ratios. Suspension was sharpened significantly, the track widened, the aero was more aggressive, and larger brakes fitted. The result was a car that circulated the Nurburgring 23.6 seconds faster than the standard GT4, in addition to being faster than the 991 GT3.

The focused character of the GT4RS could be further heightened by the installation of the optional Weissach package (at a cost of $13,250), which replaced certain bodywork components with ones (front deck lid, side intakes and airbox, rear wing), Magnesium wheels ($15,640, only available on Weissach package cars), and carbon ceramic brakes.

For those seeking even more performance, especially on track, Porsche dealers offered an upgrade package produced by the legendary Porsche tuner Manthey Racing. This consisted of a larger, adjustable rear wing, carbon fiber aerodiscs on the rear wheels, additional upgraded aerodynamic components around the car, new stiffer coilovers, steel brake lines, and Manthey door sills.
