Second only to the legendary Carrera RS, the 1972 911 S was the high-performance choice for those wanting to maintain civility in their pure, lightweight sports car. Fitted with a 2.4L Type 911/53 Flat-6 producing 190hp at 6,500rpm (versus that standard car’s 130hp) and a new-for-1972 Type-915 five-speed manual featuring a traditional shift pattern and more robust internals, the 911 S rewarded its buyers with the ability to attain 143mph. Additionally, the 911 S introduced a new front chin spoiler designed to reduce front-end lift by up to 40% at speed – helping eliminate some of the inherent tail-happy nature of a rear-engined car – and was soon proven effective enough to bring to the rest of the lineup.

Interior changes included additional gauges and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, all adding to a special feel matched by its incredible (for 1972) base price of nearly $10,000. Stunningly beautiful, impressively powerful, and a joy to drive, the 911 S perfectly split the difference between the aforementioned Carrera S and its less performance-oriented stablemates.
