The 1972 model year marked the ultimate evolution of the early 911, with an upgraded engine increasing displacement from 2.2 to 2.4 litres, delivering 130 hp. Only in the US, the 911 were equipped with a mechanical injection increasing the power to 140hp.

The legendary and rare “Oil Klappe” also appeared at this time with an oil filler located on the right rear fender when Porsche decided to move the oil tank in front of the rear axle to improve the balance of the car. This system was taken from the mythical 911R which became later a subject of controversy leading to its removal in 1973 due to the confusion with the fuel filler.
