It seems impossible to fathom now, but in the early 1970s Porsche was considering a possible replacement for the 911. After six years of development, the Porsche 928 debuted at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show and it wasn’t long after that Porsche began working on a series of performance updates to keep the car firmly placed at the top of their model lineup. The company continuously developed the car throughout its inordinately long liftespan, finally culimating in the late 1991 release of the GTS.

Combining the performance of the GT with the comfort of the S4, the GTS offered improved aerodynamics, a 345hp 5.4L V8, and numerous luxury features and was truly a sensation upon its release. Unfortunately, the already expensive 928 saw its base price increase to over $80,000, with many well-optioned cars costing over the $100,000 mark. Naturally, this limited sales to only a few thousand produced worldwide before the 928’s production ended. Today, the GTS is one of the most vaunted versions of the car and are only likely to increase in value over time.
