Model History

The Porsche 944 was introduced in the early 1980s as a further development of the Porsche 924. While the 924 originally stemmed from a design developed by Porsche for Volkswagen, the 944 was built on a significantly more independent technical foundation featuring a four-cylinder engine developed by Porsche. The model debuted in 1981 and was very well received by the press and customers. Production took place largely at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm, where the 924 was also built. The 944 quickly established itself as a sporty yet practical transaxle Porsche and is now considered one of the brand’s defining sports cars from the 1980s.
