The first generation 993 Carrera develops 272 horsepower. The X51 option allows for 285 horsepower, via a displacement increased to 3.8 liters, more aggressive camshafts, larger valves, and specific pistons, cylinder heads, and crankshaft.
In 1996, the 993 Carrera adopted the Varioram variable intake system and increased to 285 horsepower, as if the X51 option had become standard. But if the power outputs are identical, one has a 3.6-liter displacement and the other 3.8, so don’t confuse them! This new 993 with Varioram can in any case also receive the X51 option. Using the same recipe as before, it then offers 300 horsepower, as on the Carrera RS.
The exact number of 993 X51 models is unknown, Porsche has never released it; in any case, it is certain that the 993 Cabriolet X51 are true rarities.
