The vehicle in detail

The 993-generation Turbo S provided a dramatic and fitting final chapter for the air-cooled Porsche, as the last air-cooled 911 Turbo built by the manufacturer. Each car was carefully and uniquely prepared by Porsche’s Exclusiv department, with bespoke features and numerous engine and chassis upgrades. Powered by a 3.6-litre flat-six engine featuring an alloy crankcase and cylinder heads, the Turbo S received larger twin-KKK turbochargers for instant throttle response and a new Bosch Motronic engine management system modified to handle the additional output, which increased to a mighty 444 brake horsepower. A secondary oil cooler was also added to better dissipate heat.

Many of the car’s technical advancements were adapted from the legendary 959, including electronically controlled all-wheel drive—a first for the Porsche Turbo model. Stopping power for the Turbo S came from larger cross-drilled, multi-piston, ventilated disc brakes. To prevent brake fade during intense driving sessions, Porsche added discrete air ducts near the fog lamps on the front valance and on the rear arches above the wheels.

Yellow brake calipers helped identify the Turbo S, along with a new “Aerokit Turbo II” front-end and an enlarged twin-blade fixed rear wing with integrated vents feeding air to the intercooler. A wide-body design helped accommodate larger 18-inch alloy wheels, while the engine sang through four exhaust pipes. An upgraded six-speed manual transaxle helped the Turbo S achieve 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and a top speed just shy of 300 km/h.

Built in March 1997, this extraordinary Turbo S was retained by Porsche AG in Germany upon completion. The 911 was registered to the factory under the licence plate “S-MN 1906”. Serving as a “pre-production” example, this car was finished six months before the start of production of the Turbo S, of which just 336 examples were made. It was deployed by the factory as the very car used to homologate the production run and was later involved in various press and promotional activities executed to launch the car. The car is accompanied by a period press pack from Porsche, in which the car can be seen in the brochure photos wearing its “S-MN 1906” registration.

It is also recognisable with its distinctive Arctic Silver Metallic paintwork over the plush Weinrot interior, which it retains today. As a result of its spell of exposure as Porsche’s promotional car, the 911 can be found in many marque-specialist books devoted to Porsche and the 993-generation car.

Upon entering the cabin, enthusiasts will immediately recognise Porsche’s legendary senior test driver, Walter Röhrl’s signature inscribed upon the brushed aluminum door sill. Once inside, passengers will be hard pressed to find a surface not cloaked in either leather or carbon fibre. Carbon fibre panels are found on the dash, door panels, centre console, tunnel, shifter, and gauge cluster while the carbon-wrapped instruments sport optional aluminium faces. Even the optional Motorola 2200 integrated car phone is wrapped in carbon fibre.

The optional heated, racing-style sport seats with power adjustment are cloaked in the same burgundy leather down to their frames and controls. The leather likewise cloaks near every interior surface, with options listing leather on the dash vent covers, steering wheel and column, car phone housing, seatbelt covers, door switches, headliner, and sun visors. Other luxurious appointments include cruise control, sunroof, digital sound package, rain sensing windscreen wipers with auto dimming rearview mirror, and an integrated stereo navigation system.

After being sold by the Porsche factory in September 1998, the 911 came into the hands of a long-term private German owner, who would be its only keeper until being acquired by The Carrera Collection. Retaining a meticulous service history, the Turbo S is accompanied by a service book that is stamped by Porsche dealers 17 times between 1998 and 2020. The odometer reads 120,129 kilometres at the time of cataloguing, attesting to the fact that this car has been used and enjoyed regularly throughout its life but also correctly maintained in equal measure.

Exhilarating performance, advanced 959-inspired engineering, bespoke features, and assembly by Porsche Exclusive with upgraded factory components throughout, the Turbo S came together in one definitive sports car that only a select few Porsche enthusiasts could acquire in 1997. The serious collector could do no better than this cherished example, perhaps the most renowned of all remaining examples of the highly coveted type-993 Turbo S.
