Model history

The Porsche 996 marked the beginning of a new era in the 911 model series in 1998: it was the first model with a water-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine. This technical change enabled higher performance and compliance with modern emissions standards. The design was also fundamentally revised - the 996 was wider, longer and more comfortable than its predecessor. The Turbo had all-wheel drive as standard. To this day, the 996 is considered a turning point in 911 history.
