At the time of its release in 1998, the 996-generation 911 represented the largest, most intensive updates to the model since the car’s introduction in late 1963. With a significantly sleeker, more fluid shape, a dramatically updated interior, and water-cooled engines, the 996 is easy to differentiate from any 911 from before or since. Naturally, these changes proved quite divisive, especially among Porsche purists. Even still, the 996 proved to be more than up to the task of continuing the legacy of one of the automotive industry’s brightest stars.

For 2002, the 996 received a slew of updates addressing various customer requests. More rigid bodywork gave the car sharper handling and the new 3.6L Flat-6 offered 320hp; an increase of 20hp over the initial 996. The headlamp design – a common criticism of the car – was brought in line with the Turbo models which had been released in late 1999. Larger air intakes and new wheel designs added to the mild, yet striking, visual updates. Overall, enthusiasts are returning to the 996 for its easy to live with demeanor and inspiring driving dynamics.
