Porsche unveiled the 996 GT3 at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1999 as a homologation special for their GT3 R race car competing at Le Mans that same year. This was Porsche’s first modern GT3 – the car that established the formula still used today. Unlike standard 996s rolling off the Zuffenhausen production line, every GT3 was hand-built at Weissach by Porsche Motorsport specialists. This wasn’t just another 911 variant. This was a motorsport project for the road, and you can literally feel the racing heritage the moment you fire it up:
- The M96.76 Mezger engine is derived from the GT1 Le Mans car. Porsche took a modified air-cooled block (still wearing a “964” part number!), fitted it with water-cooled heads, forged pistons, titanium connecting rods, and an 11.7:1 compression ratio. The result: 360 hp at 7,200 rpm screaming to a 7,800 rpm redline, although the engine was designed to run at 9,000 rpm before Porsche fitted a soft limiter for street use.
- The G96/90 gearbox comes from the 993 GT2 with improved synchronizers and stronger casing. A mechanical limited-slip differential is your only traction aid: no stability control, no electronic nannies. Just you, the car, and the road.
- The Aerokit Cup adds functional aerodynamics with its distinctive fixed rear wing. This is a car that feels alive in a way modern GT3s simply can’t match.
This particular GT3 was delivered new in Japan in 2000 and later imported to Europe, where it has remained in private collections ever since. Just 26,200 km from new, and of course never accidented. The car comes with all original documentation and service history.
It’s finished in the iconic Speed Yellow over black leather bucket seats and yellow seat belts: the DREAM SPEC for a 996.1 GT3, where the low mileage is the cherry on top.
The car has just completed a full 111-check at Porsche. Major service was performed ahead of sale: all fluids changed (engine, gearbox, differentials), new spark plugs fitted, all belts replaced, air conditioning serviced and recharged, and four new Michelin tires mounted. The car is completely sorted and ready for many years of trouble-free use. It’s accident-free with mostly original paint: only the nose has been repainted to address stone chips from road use.
The 996.1 GT3 market is literally on jet fuel. Early examples in Speed Yellow with low mileage, accident-free history, and collector ownership simply don’t come up anymore. The survivors are already tucked away in collections, so don’t miss your chance!
